How to Decorate with Scandinavian Interior Design Style

The essence of the Scandinavian Interior Design style is calm, pure, functional, and clean. This style is all about creating clean and functional aesthetics.

Although it has been around for a long time, it has gained popularity in recent decades.

Scandinavian style is ideal for those who love minimal, clean, and understated elegance.

Has anyone heard about Hygge?

For those who haven’t heard, let me explain the logic behind this Hygge philosophy. This is the lifestyle that Danish people embrace; it’s also known as “Danish Secrets to Happy Living.”

Hygge became popular after Denmark ranked first among the happiest countries in the world.

It was born out of long and cold Scandinavian nights and aimed to transform the coldness into warm environments with candlelight and friends.

This concept includes all the simple pleasures of life that make you feel good like candles, a fragrant environment, shared friendships, a high-quality but simple life, long food conversations, and a warm blanket.

Understanding this concept and decorating your Scandinavian style house around Hygge philosophy is an integral part of choosing minimalist living.

Scandinavian Interior Design Style

Honestly, I am a fan of crowded spaces and colorful interiors; this attracts me more. However, it is impossible not to be affected by Scandinavian functionality and coolness.

So let’s talk about how you can achieve this!

# Features of the Scandinavian Style Furnishings

Scandinavian style furniture aesthetics are very much like Mid-Century Modern style; clean lines, smooth rounded edges, and splayed tapered legs are on most of its furniture.

Nearly all of the furniture in this style is composed of wood and famous for being a low profile.

Most common pieces of furniture in the Scandinavian style which you can use without hesitation are:

  • Leather Back Sling Chairs
  • Eames DSW Chairs
  • Multilevel Storage
  • Jacobsen Egg Chairs
  • Jacobsen 7 Chairs

The standard feature of all this furniture is simplicity. We can also add a pouf to this list. You can easily use cotton poufs in your Scandinavian style home to add warmth to your space.

Materials

As I said, this style loves every shade of wood, especially lighter colored ones such as; beech, pine, and ash.

Color Scheme

It is essential to use a lot of texture in this Scandinavian style. You will see a major use of natural materials like wool, linen, cotton, and leather, which are much more favored over synthetic materials.

You will see these materials in various ways like thick knitted cotton blankets on the sofas, wool rugs, and linen, cotton, or leather-covered furniture. Hygge’s favorites! 🙂

Color Scheme

White dominates the Scandinavian style color schemes. Why do you think that is?

It is to make the space appear as bright as possible, even on the gloomiest day. Maybe their love for snow has a little bit of an effect on this decision-make sense to me 🙂

Black is one of the more common accent colors in Scandinavian color palettes.

Other neutral colors used are grays and browns. Yellow, red, and blues are generally used as accent colors in places like rugs, artwork, pillows, and pottery.

# Accessorize Your Scandinavian Style House

For a style like Scandinavian (plain and simple), accessories are a requirement.

Home accessories are an excellent opportunity for you to feel the Scandinavian style atmosphere in your home instead of having in a boring space.

Window Coverings

Window Coverings

Windows are generally left bare, and I’m sure you can guess why: to let in as much natural light as possible.

With all the recent Interior Design Styles, most of them are not using window coverings anymore because today’s architecture allows us to have privacy while still letting in sunlight with new technology.

If window coverings are used in a Scandinavian style, they are light fabrics like linen and sheer in pale colors.

Rugs

Area rugs are the best choice for a Scandinavian home. My recommendation is to choose rugs with natural materials like wool, fiber, or sheepskin.

Patterns are not commonly used in the Scandinavian style. However, black and white patterns have become trendy in this style recently.

The use of patterns is generally in rugs. If you want to use patterns, focus on modest and muted colors rather than busy and bright ones.

Artwork

Artwork

It is time to use some bright colors. You can consider using large abstract paintings or a gallery wall with a bright, coordinated color scheme.

Creating a gallery wall can be a little bit tricky sometimes. You need to know these rules before you hang your artwork for a foolproof gallery wall.
